Via delle Pescherie Vecchie
A two-minute walk from our charming hotel in Piazza Maggiore and from Piazza del Nettuno you will find via delle Pescherie Vecchie, whose name reminds us of the tradition of fishmongers that, since medieval times, enlivened this part of the city. During this period, in fact, the street was lined with fresh fish shops. The street has maintained great commercial vitality over the centuries and, even today, while evolving over time, retains a unique charm. It is also considered one of the main streets where one can sit for an excellent aperitivo of Bolognese delicacies. After an aperitif on Via delle Pescherie Vecchie, why not relax at the Art Hotel dei Commercianti?
Via Calzolerie
Via Calzolerie, located just a few meters from Via Rizzoli, that leads to the< em>Asinelli Tower and the< em>Garisenda Tower, has long been linked to shoemaking and the trade of footwear. In the past, this street was known for housing shoemakers who were specialized in repairing and crafting handmade shoes. Bologna has always been a city that has made craftsmanship and quality production its strong point, and the shoemakers of Via Calzolerie were an example of this. Even today the street still retains numerous stores offering fashion-related accessories and items. Therefore, after a long day of shopping, there is nothing better than staying at ourhotel in the centre of Bologna.
Via Orefici, Via dell'Oro and Via degli Arenti
Via Orefici is one of the oldest streets in Bologna, deeply connected to the city's goldsmith tradition. Since the Middle Ages, it has been home to workshops where goldsmiths worked metal to create jewelry and precious items. The street’s name testifies to this long-lived tradition. Another street that once hosted goldsmiths and jewelers is via dell'Oro, located near Porta Castiglione. Nearby, you can find via degli Arenti, also known for housing the furnaces used for melting metals. The senso of "preciousness" found in these streets is reflected in the atmosphere of our Art Hotel dei Commercianti.
Via Capraie
This street is historically associated with foodtrade. The name Capraie refers to the goats that were raised, slaughtered and then sold nearby. In the past, this street was known as < em> Ruga degli Scannabecchi where the Scannabecchi referred to Beccari, meaning butchers. Altough less famous than other central streets in Bologna, Via Capraie remains a charming and historical site full of stores and artisan workshops.
Via Drapperie, via Chiudare, via Altaseta and via de' Gargiolari
Via Drapperie was historically known for its drapery and textil trade where fine fabrics and clothing material were sold. Located in the heart of Bologna’s historical center, it is just few steps away from Piazza Maggiore, Palazzo del Podestà, the two towers, a symbol of the city, and, of course, from our boutique hotel and apartments in Via d'Azeglio. Similarly, via Chiudare was also part of Bologna’s textile tradition. The term < em>chiuvara or chiudara , in fact, referred to a clothesline used to hang freshly dyed clothes to dry. As for silk, the best-known street was via Altaseta, known for the most beautiful and famous stores selling high quality silk. Via de' Gargiolari was the home to hemp sellers and workers who were called canepini or gargiolari .
